The Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission (the Commission) is continuing to promote its CEO Leadership Charter. In 2009, the Charter will continue to be based on the principle that the effective management of health, safety and wellness is essential to the operation of a successful business. The Commission recognizes that safety-conscious CEO’s who commit to occupational health and safety programs is a critical element in the prevention of workplace injuries.
This year, the Commission will select approximately six more CEO’s and invite them to sign the CEO Leadership Charter. The selection will consist of employers who have been nominated and/or selected based on their commitment to healthy and safe workplaces. Recognition events will be scheduled at each of the selected CEO’s workplaces enabling all workplace parties to participate in the recognition bestowed on their CEO by the Commission. Deadline for nominations will be June 12, 2009.
How to Apply:
Nominations of CEO’s for the 2009 CEO Leadership Charter can be made through self-nomination by CEO, nomination of CEO by employees or nomination by a current signatory. The Commission may also select CEO’s.
As part of the selection process, nominees must complete the following questions:
- How is health and safety promoted to employees and visitors of the workplace?
- Outline some of the strategies and processes that lead to good health and safety performance of the organization?
- How does the organization effectively identify and control hazards in the workplace.
- How is continuous leadership exemplified toward improving workplace health and safety in the organization?
- Give an example of how the organization empowers and enables all employees to participate and work collaboratively in developing, promoting and improving health and safety at work.
- Does the organization have partnerships that support community related health and safety initiatives?
The Commission will review the health and safety performances of the nominated companies and give consideration to the following:
1. PRIME Compliance
2. Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S)Committee status
3. Compliance with training requirements as outlined in OH&S Legislation
4. Charges laid under the OH&S Act within the past 3 years*
5. Fatalities that occurred within the past 3 years*
*Additional information may be submitted to explain how your organization has improved in the area of health and safety since the occurrence of a charge or fatality.
Once the final selection takes place, the Commission’s Board Chair and Chief Executive Officer will arrange to present the Charter for signature at each of the selected CEO’s worksites.
