High risk occupation certification

endMenu

Within Newfoundland and Labrador there are certain occupations that require some type of occupational health and safety certification process. Certification will ensure that workers in high risk occupations will be required to complete specific occupational health and safety training in order to perform their tasks safely. Certification is currently legislated for asbestos abatement, blasting, commercial diving, power line hazards and mine rescue.

Certification training is administered as follows:

  1. Requirements for asbestos abatement are outlined in the Asbestos Abatement Code of Practice that is enforced by the OH&S Division of the Department of Government Services.
  2. An apprenticeship program for blasting is currently administered by the Department of Education.
  3. The Marine Institute has the responsibility for overseeing the occupational health and safety training of commercial divers.
  4. The Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission is responsible for power line hazards certification and mine rescue training.
