In Canada, jurisdiction over health and safety is a shared responsibility between the territories, the provinces and the federal government. Inter-provincial and international industries are covered by the Canada Labour Code Part II and include such industries as:
- Railways
- Highway transport from one province/territory to another
- Telephone and telegraph systems
- Pipelines
- Canals
- Ferries, tunnels and bridges
- Shipping and shipping services
- Radio and television broadcasting (including cable systems)
- Airports
- Banks
- Grain elevators, certain feed mills and feed warehouses
- The federal public service including crown corporations and agencies
- The exploration and development of petroleum on lands subject to federal jurisdiction
Workplace health and safety committees / Health and safety representatives in these industries are provided support through Human Resources and Social Development Canada (HRSDC). A Labour Affairs Officer (Safety) under HRSDC’s Labour Program is available to enforce the Canada Labour Code and provide other assistance as required. This does not mean that the Commission can not help. Services provided by the Prevention Services Department are open to all firms in the province, regardless of the jurisdiction.
