A worker health and safety representative is required in workplaces where less than 10 workers are employed. The employer must ensure a worker not connected with management is designated as the workers' health and safety representative. In circumstances where a worker health and safety representative is impractical (i.e. companies with a high turnover of staff or all part time workers), and less than six persons are employed at the workplace, an employer may appoint a workplace health and safety designate.
The workplace health and safety designate can be a worker connected with management or the employer if the designation of a worker connected with management is not practicable.
The workplace health and safety designate:
- monitors the health, safety and welfare of workers employed at the workplace
- connects the employer and workers when it comes to addressing health and safety concerns at the workplace
- identifies and evaluates concerns
- make recommendations for corrective actions and promotes health and safety in the workplace
- participates in workplace inspections
- trained according to legislative requirements.
